Altham's Fine Foods

Need a hint?

You will need the receipt from Altham's Fine Foods and the letter of complaint to solve this one.

The amount of each food item received is key.

Make sure to take note of the complaints raised in the letter.

The amounts stated next to each food item relate to a letter (e.g. Codfish ..... 7 pounds = H). But you must adjust these according to the letter of complaint. Cross off the flour, sugar, beef and molasses. Adjust the eggs and onions to 2. Picking out the letters gives "H, E, T, E, I, N, E, G". Rearranging gives EIGHTEEN.

Barometer

Need a hint?

The word shifty offers a hint and the fact BAR is in capitals is important.

The numbers shown in the sentences for each day tell you how to shift the word bar.

"Pressure went down 10 pascals" so shift the word BAR down the alphabet 10 places. Though pausing to think through your method here can save a lot of time.

Start with the word BAR. Each description of the presure change instructs you to move up or down the alphabet. Monday and Friday cancel each other out. A drop of 26 makes no real difference. Tuesday and Wednesday say up 2 and down 15, this will have a net affect of down 13. So B becomes O, A becomes N and R becomes E to spell ONE.

Graph

Need a hint?

No labels on the graph but there are some dashes. Count them.

There are 26 dashes on the vertical axis, this is significant.

The alphabet contains 26 letters, each dash is a letter.

Label the axis a-z starting at the bottom and working upwards. Replace each dot with the letter they line up with to spell out "what date in march is the brig dragon to set sail" the answer can be found in the newspaper, it is FIFTEEN.

Instructions to Lightkeepers

Need a hint?

The blanked out letters are key.

The shapes that are covering these letters are also important.

Count the number of sides of each shape.

There are eight letters covered with different shapes. The circle (with one side) covers the letter F, the semi-circle (with two sides) covers the letter O. Continuing this pattern to pick out all 8 letters gives FORTY TWO.

Journal of Light Station

Need a hint?

You will need the Journal of Light Station record and the compass.

Each wind direction will give you a letter when used with the compass.

The first arrow points South and the first number associated with it, 4, is the key to getting a letter.

Taking the first arrow pointing south combined with the first number, 4, gives T (the forth letter of the word South). The next arrow, pointing North and matching with the first number, 5, gives H (the 5th letter in North). As you work your way through, there are four arrows for each direction and four numbers for each on the compass. Working through them in order gives "the answer two tens" which is TWENTY.

Lighthouse Image

Need a hint?

Some string would be useful here.

The symbols on the back of the image give an order.

The symbols are roman numerials, start where it says and thread the string.

Threading the string through in the order shown makes the number SEVEN.

Map

Need a hint?

You will need three items for this puzzle, the map and letter to Trinity House being two of them.

The letter talks about Morse code, the Morse code key will be useful.

There is some Morse code on the map but it's a bit mixed up.

The letter to Trinity House complains about the 2nd assistant mixing up Morse code - always doing dots as dashes and dashes as dots. There is a message in Morse code along the middle of the map (it goes above the word lighthouse and below the words high water mark of ordinary tides). Changing the dots back to dashes and the dashes back to dots, and using the Morse code key given gives THIRTY SEVEN.

Recipes

Need a hint?

You will need all five recipes to solve this puzzle.

Some letters in each recipe are highlighted in some way, you will need these.

The order to this is given at the start of each line in each recipe.

The first letters of each recipe spell out the order (first, second, third, forth and fifth). Picking out the various letters give "three times eight divide by four add ten minus two equals". This gives FOURTEEN.

Voyager

Need a hint?

This almost looks like English, just jumbled up. From the clue given in the text, there seems to be something significant about the number three.

Each group of three characters (including spaces) has been moved around in some way.

This is a block permutation cipher. For each group of three characters (including spaces) the first character has been moved to the back of the group.

To unscramble the message, simply move every third character to the front of the previous two characters (including spaces) to get "The packet ship voyager says thirty five is the solution. So the answer is THIRTY FIVE.

Puzzle Order

Need a hint?

The North Wales Chronicle holds the key to the order.

It contains some hidden words. Focussing at the top, by the date will help.

The OR and DER will combine to make the word order. Folding will help.

In folding the newspaper to match OR and DER to give the word ORDER, you also reveal the words POINT OF AYR LIGHTHOUSE TALACRE going down the page. Notice each puzzle conatins three letters, arrange them to spell this. This is the order of the puzzles.
